Telescope CCD Filter

Telescope Requirements

  • Minimum aperture: 9.5 inches or 24 centimeters
  • Suggested focal length: f/4 or f/5, but more important is to match the CCD's pixel resolution to the seeing and to the telescope's image size while retaining a large field of view!

CCD Requirements

  • One of the top-notch, commercial CCDs such as:
    • Apogee
    • HiSIS
    • SBIG
    • Meade

  • Pixel resolution of 2 arcseconds or better.

Filter Requirements

Use standard photometric filters (Kron-Cousins, Johnson, Bessell) V and R to make observations of the comet. These filters allow us to do scientifically meaningful studies of Comet 9P/Tempel 1. If your system has an infrared cutoff filter, it must be removed when you observe with photometric, broadband, V and R filters! If you do not have these types of filters, do not lose hope! You have some options:

  1. This science program may be able to supply you with photometric, Bessel V and R filters. Please contact Stef McLaughlin at stefmcl[at]astro.umd.edu for more information.
  2. We will accept images made with no filters. These images allow us to record changes of the comet's total visual magnitude over time.
  3. We will accept standard photographic RGB filters. However, it will be difficult to get scientifically useful results from these images since photometric filters have very different transmission curves when compared to photometric UBVRI filters. If you send photographic RGB images, we will post them on the STSP website but we will not analyze them.
